Studio Tour!

1: Dry Erase Calendar. Helpful for keeping on task. I haven't erased anything from it since 2008. I don't even know what month is listed there
2: 13" Macbook Pro. Fun toy. Usually has a script up, or a reference file.
3: 2 x 17" Studio Displays. Old but still work fantastically.
4: Intel G5 tower thingy. She has logged some miles.
5: Lightbox. For.. stuff.
6: Wacom 6"x9" Tablet. eBay find, super cheap, and super useful for how I use it.
7: Guarding the Globe pages.

1: Mirror for acting out silly poses/expressions. Thanks animation classes!
2: 3-way light that has been around... forever. One of the lights is red, it helps pick up nonphoto blue pages.
3: Dog and Cat themed Calendar. Just for awesomeness.
4: Table. Cheap, portable, and loved.
5: Ink testing paper taped to the table. Many a brush point have been found on this paper.
6: Candle and Art Supply case. Was my Grandfather's which he had when he worked for GE as a draftsman. It has great shelving in it and is so perfect for what I'm using it for.
7: Clutter because I don't have time to clean.

1: Reference books. Mostly Invincible and Brit collections.
2: That same old huge stack of the first three issues of GtG.
3: HP 9800 printer. More than likely with full Magenta, Yellow, and Black cartridges.
4: Papers. For sketching and for pages. I use Strathmore 500 series boards for work.
5: Page and art holding... thing.
6: Epson scanner. HUGE.
7: Sean Murphy Hellblazer art that I need to put back in its home.
8: Marvel pages.

That's about it.

Alright, Issue 2 came out of GUARDING THE GLOBE pencilled by me this week. I wanted to say thanks to everyone who picked up the first issue, and who stuck around to see what this 2nd one is about. I've said it before, but, I'm recommitting myself to this blog thing. Less deviantart. So here are some pages that I'm only posting here. After seeing Cory Walker, and Nate Bellegarde's recent awesome sketches, of awesome characters. I decided to do up a character that's been in my head for a while.

Soviet super-spy Oleg Rusakova was moments away from diffusing a nuclear device at the local aquarium when leaking radiation caused him to bond with a nearby Lobster. The event granted him all the powers of a Lobster aside from the large claws.
He is now, the Red Lobster.

Guardians of the Globe!

The new miniseries I will be drawing has been announced. Really excited to be working with Benito and Robert on this, and hope you guys enjoy it as much as I'm enjoying working on it. It comes out in August, and feel more than welcome to get multiple copies. Seriously, it's okay.

Today I sat down trying to do a 90 minute sketch of the Guardians. I ran a little long I think, I honestly don't know how long I spent on this. I planned on adding more characters but I needed to get to real work, so these fools will have to do. Working on drawing smaller characters, although, I should have spent more time on the tiny ones. Oh well.

Yes I realize that the background is a joke, as are some of the characters. eh.

So, I've been pretty bad at posting lately. I've been busy so I apologize. As some of ya'll may know, I've been doing my first work for Marvel the past couple of months. Issues 1 and 2 of Skrull Kill Krew (inked by yours truly, pencils by Mark A Robinson) have come out, along with Amazing Spider-man Family 7 (pencils Val Semeiks). I have been having a really good time working on those projects, and thats good because they are some long houred days! I'm finishing up some inking on the rest of SKK and already have my next two projects lined up that I'm SUPER excited about. One is penciling, one is pencils and inks. It's going to be fun because I'll get to be drawing some of my favorite characters from each of the companies. Needless to say, I'm psyched.

Even though I'm just starting up in the industry, I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the way, and there have been A LOT. Whether you gave encouraging critiques or harsh criticism, to just saying hi, I've appreciated it. So thanks to Scot, Claudette, Jay, Cliff, Mark, Chris, Steve, Tom, Justin, Robert, MikeyO, Mike, Neal, TomBomb, JLowe, Shawn, Dale, Julian, Sam, Andy, Jarrett, Evan, Tyson, Mom and Dad, and everyone else who've helped me so far. I owe a lot of people drinks.

Now, after some sleep, I have to go get a hell of a lot better at this whole art thing!

I just Watched the Watchmen, so I decided to do the new version of Silk Spectre kicking down her old costume. This is a little rougher because I tried to ink straight over some loose pencil layouts as opposed to finishing the pencils. Trying to work at getting quicker. Though unsuccessful in my mind, hopefully this will start clicking more.

About a 90 min sketch.

So this is part one of my process. My new process. Trying my hand at painting on a canvas with some acrylics I had lying around. Picture based off a photo. This is probably, and hopefully, about 25% of where this will end up being. I'll post some more as I go.

Wanted to be done with this today, as it's only 8"x10", but I haven't been able to work long sessions as of late. More soon.

Well! It has been a while hasn't it? Long breaks deserve long posts so here we go!

First, URGENT business!

Tonight, November 9th, at Midnight, marks the premiere of the AdultSwim show The Xtacles! I was lucky enough to do a little spot illustration work for the second episode and think this show turned out great! The first two episodes will be debuted tonight so I would really appreciate all ya'lls staying up late and watching this show. Cartoon Network, Sunday night, midnight. If you liked Frisky Dingo, or Sealabs 2021, you will love this show. More on that at a later time!

Secondly,

If any of you picked up issue 53 of Invincible, you may have noticed that the pinup I posted earlier found its way into the book! I was super excited to see my work in probably my favorite comic. I've liked that series since first picking it up. So thanks to Kirkman and the whole crew for doing that for me! On a comical side note, I did think it was funny how the compositions were humorously similar when comparing Invincible on the cover and my pinup. To again clear things up, I was doing a recreation of Herp Trimpe's Incredible Hulk # 181.

Thirdly,

I was playing around with some concept work ideas and techniques. Trying to continue to develop some sense of how to color. So, for some reason this monster sketch came out.

Fourthly,
Since I last posted, we had an election thingy! This marked the first year I voted in the Presidential election and I felt it was a good year to start. Without getting too preachy, I was happy to see Senator Obama come out on top, though I do like Senator McCain. Though he may have his work cut out for himself, I wish President-elect Obama all the best. Good stuff. Nice to see people voting FOR a candidate as opposed to voting AGAINST another.

Color!

So I normally try to leave coloring to the professionals. But silly me, I've started to get a little itchy and wanted to broaden my range... ha. I colored up the pinup that I posted previously digitally. I spent a little too long on it, but I am happy with the results. Although, I will NEVER start another image without knowing what a character's color scheme will be. That Soviet Reaniman, had just about every possible combination of red, gold, and black you can imagine....

And then I got cocky. Confidence is a terrible thing. I tried to tackle some real life coloring techniques and I broke out the watercolors. I feel like they tore me a new one, buuuut, I will be playing around with it more until I get it right. This was my first attempt at painting in nearly three years, so not terrible, but not good. Hopefully I'll do some more soon. And hopefully, they will improve. Also, these look darker and less pink/purple in real life, but I refused to digitally retouch them.
